Post Natal Depression
Traditionally, childbirth is reviewed by society as a joyful event, not only in Westernised countries, but also in other cultures.
It is a time for celebration, fulfillment and hope. The private experience of childbirth is often in stark contrast to this idealized image, however, with daunting number of woman experiencing low moods and emotional instability.
Many New Moms struggle with issues as:
- The new set of demands a baby brings
- The loss of order and routine
- Changes in their role, including career decisions
- The relationship with their partner and his possible adjustment difficulties to parenting
- Her partners absence due to work demands or relationship breakdown, and
- Single parenting
Concurrently, stresses in a new mother's life may include
- Isolation
- Financial difficulties or
- Unexpectedly difficult birth
This emotional upheaval in conjunction with postpartum hormonal imbalances in vulnerable woman can lead to depression with varying degrees.
A small portion of moms enter what is commonly known as full psychotic depressive episode, 10-20% experience post natal depression, a condition characterized by
- Feelings of Sadness, guilt, worthlessness and anxiety
- Thoughts about suicide and death
- Difficulties in concentration and decision making
- Disturbances of appetite and sleep
- Lack of interest and energy
These symptoms are transitory, but can persist in varying degrees for a number of years.

Our unit has specialized facilities for both mother and infant, and we offer a multi-dimensional treatment and approach, which includes individual psychodynamic, group and family therapy. Mothers are taught to take care of themselves and their babies in the context of their psychological, physiological, emotional and social needs.
